Miriam Lee was an innovative and amazing woman who was at the forefront of helping acupuncture and TCM become a common practice the U.S. today. Those of us who experience the benefits of acupuncture have her to thank for her hard work, belief, and perseverance in Chinese medicine. She was arrested for practicing in California, but the incident led to the legalization of acupuncture in the state of California and eventually other states. Lee also introduced innovative as well ancient traditions of TCM in North America, such as bloodletting, Dr. Tung acupoints, and other insights for practicing acupuncturists. More information is on the website of Susan Johnson (see photo above), who was one of her students.

You can read more about the history of acupuncture in the United States on the Insights for Acupuncturists website where Lisa Hanfileti, LAc, MAcOM, also discusses the famous acupuncturist.

Two of her books are: Insights of a Senior Acupuncturist: One Combination of Points Can Treat Many Diseases, and Master Tong’s Acupuncture: An Ancient Alternative Style in Modern Clinical Practice can both be found on amazon.com, and Insights can be found at Portland’s powellsbooks.com.

On a side note…..Acufinder started a magazine! I happened to stumble upon their second publication last month, and I think it’s a great idea. Like the website, it’s a handy source of information about CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicines) modalities such as massage, qi gong, and naturopathy. If you are unable to find a copy in your neighborhood, you can order it online on the
acufinder.com website.

Miriam Lee is my hero. (The name of my website is in part in honor of her.) To me, she is the essence of dedication, perseverance, committment, caring, and integrity. I re-read her book, Insights of a Senior Acupuncturist, often and always seem to glean new pearls of wisdom and practical information. Early in my career I read her book to look for point combinations to treat my patients. Now when I read it, I am not looking for anything. I read with a sense of awe and gratitude for what she went through, her clarity of thought, and her spirit of helping others. So when the (relatively minor) business challenges of running a practice seem difficult, I am reminded of how she faced far greater obstacles with “a prayerful heart”.

Thanks, Amy, for keeping Miriam Lee’s books in the awareness of new students and experienced acupuncturiists. Whether we realize it or not, we are all indebted to her.
