Not in Oregon! Or at least that is the current argument we acupuncturists have against chiropractors, who want to use acupuncture as part of therapeutic treatment.
Check out this brief article in the Willamette Weekly about dry needling and the potential effects if the vote passes tomorrow.
The OAAOM also has a list of past letters written about this issue- read them on their website for more information
What do you think?
Well looks like the chiropractors got what they wanted. “Dry needling” for neuro-muscular conditions. Not quite acupuncture but I can see why acupuncturists don’t like this.
This is happening now in CO.
Shocking that they are allowing minimally trained chiropractors to do acupuncture hence the rise in reported pneumothorax and will these increase OUR malpractice rates as well ? You bet.
Promoting mutual respect and professional collaboration would be a better approach for all of our patient’s treatments and their safety.
It is quite surprising actually, like kine says. I am in support of licensing for acupuncture only after rigorous training and sufficient education. Very interesting issue.
If chiropractic is so good and effective for so many things, why do they keep infringing on the acupuncture profession? Perhaps they should go to acupuncture school instead of chiropractic school.
This is very interesting. I practice pediatric dentistry in Chicago and I recently read an article that due to the lack of dental insurance some people want primary care physicians to be handling some dental care. I think this really takes away from the dental care that each and every person in America should be receiving. All we really need is a better health care insurance system!
An appeals court in Oregon has issued an injunction preventing chiropractors from practicing “dry needling”. Here is a link to its findings:

Good for the Oregon courts stepping in. I assume most of the chiropractors introducting “dry needling” don’t have much experience in that field. I don’t see why the chiropractors don’t just recommend their clients go to an acupuncturist and get a paid as a lead. Would any regulations stop this?
This is also happening in Australia. We are getting National registration next year of Acupuncture. To get around this the poorly trained Acupuncturist are just calling themselves “Dry Needling” real issue to public safety. All for registration
